Helmut Lang FW20 Street Showcase

Spotted: denim on denim making a comeback to modern day fashion.

A creative spin on New York Fashion Week’s traditional catwalk was taken when Helmut Lang worked with photographer Sunil Gupta for their Fall/Winter 2020 collection. Instead of attending a typical fashion show held inside a studio, Gupta stepped out onto Christopher Street in Greenwich Village to capture the new iconic looks in all their glory.

The collection featured a visionary of a generally dull and muted palette, with pops of color here and there. Overall, the models were styled modestly, posing as if they were all enjoying a normal day walking and interacting along the streets of New York City.

Certain couples were styled and put together to match a specific color scheme. For example, two models were photographed in pastel periwinkle shades, showing off a cool and collected vibe with a solid black blazer and unique shades to match.

In other photos, some models sporting the new collection were spotted in the background, making the entire shot look as if it were just an ordinary day out in the streets of the city. This added to the genius of the informal runway show and its modern and innovative approach to New York Fashion Week.

Additionally, the gloomy New York City background added to the entire mood of the collection. It seemed as though the vibe of the clothes being revealed was meant to blend easily with typical streetwear style.

Gupta had previously shot along the same Greenwich Village neighborhood in the late 1970s, as reported by Hypebeast. The familiar connection to the area added to the intimate feel reflected off the photos.

A gallery of the collection was displayed at Helmut Lang’s New York store until February 14. The photographs, in addition to specific pieces, were all being revealed from February 11.

5 Tantalizing Trends at the 2020 Oscars

This year’s Oscars was filled with monumental moments in both film and fashion history. Many stars took to the red carpet with different kinds of stunning looks.  From men to women and even kids, the looks from last night’s event definitely did not disappoint.

Usually men’s fashion at awards shows feature a bunch of uniform black tuxedos. However, Spike Lee turned heads at this year’s Oscars with a Kobe Bryant inspired purple and yellow-lined Gucci suit. The 62-year-old director was seen wearing the official colors of the Los Angeles Lakers, with the number 24 on both the front (both lapels) and back of the suit. To finish off the look, Lee paired his iconic outfit with orange Nike Kobe 9 Elite “Strategy” sneakers, and a dark purple cabbie hat with little black motifs.

Another look that was one-of-a-kind was seen on 18-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer Billie Eilish. The singer wore head-to-toe Chanel, sporting a white tweed suit with Chanel pins all across, along with black sneakers and lace gloves. To finish off her look, Eilish showed off large Chanel earrings and a necklace to go with her sizable rings and long black nails. Eilish’s look could not have been complete without her iconic neon green and black hair to add a pop of color and personality to her otherwise posh Chanel look.

This year, we saw the adorable Jojo Rabbit duo Roman Griffin Davis and Archie Yates bringing smiles to everyone’s faces as they stunned in matching tuxedos. 13-year-old Davis, however, added a slight pop of color to his look with the addition of his bright orange collar. The two were seen all smiles on the red carpet posing for photos with bunny ears and peace signs.

The Jojo Rabbit stars weren’t the only kids wow-ing the red carpet, as 10-year-old actress Julia Butters was seen rocking an all-pink ensemble. The Once Upon a Time star was seen wearing a pink ruffled Christian Siriano piece, paired with a small bejeweled pink Marzook purse, in which she made everyone laugh by announcing she had brought a turkey sandwich inside.

44-year-old actress Mindy Kaling brought a refreshing pop of color to the Oscars with a bright yellow one-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana ruched gown. She paired the stunning dress with a sleek diamond necklace and yellow metal clutch.

Last but not least, Charlize Thereon is sleek and sophisticated in a classic black Dior Haute Couture gown with a long train. The 44-year-old actress finished off her look with a staggering diamond Tiffany & Co. necklace.

Streetwear – Brands + Style

The purpose of my blog is to analyze street wear and street style in terms of popular brands and outfits worn by women in the city. I’ve noticed that with street wear specifically, people tend to stick to specific brands, and style their outfits accordingly. Popular brands include Supreme, Bape, Commes des Garcons, Anti Social Social Club, etc. In this blog, I want to compare different looks by addressing the specifics of an individual’s outfit, and what makes their look so special within this subculture of fashion.

Additionally, many people view street wear or street style in general to be something mostly worn by men. Popular brands like Supreme and Bape make mainly hoodies and t-shirts with their brand logo, and not many women are seen with these kinds of clothing. For this blog specifically, I want to focus on female fashion and street wear, where it applies to unisex clothing and brands.

Street style is not just limited to the “streetwear” subculture, as it can also pertain to fashion worn on the streets of the city. New York City is no stranger to loud yet unique fashion combinations, and it would be interesting to document just what kind of outfits are being worn by the average citizen in a big city. It’s also fascinating to see how different styles can be sported depending on the area of the city you’re in, whether it be SoHo or Fifth Avenue.

There are also lots of variations of street wear being displayed within campus. Being somewhat close to New York City, lots of students at Rutgers University can be seen styling different eccentric looks every day. I want to document these instances through this blog, and analyze just where certain pieces originate from and what makes this subculture so uniform in both branding and color schemes.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
